The Problem:
A construction industry client had been involved in a criminal
and civil tax investigation by the IRS for alleged violations
in prior years. After an initial meeting, the IRS proposed
a tax deficiency and penalties in excess of $6 million. The
client simply could not support this tax burden, and was facing
potential criminal charges, liens and business and personal
bankruptcy.
The SRG Solution
In this case, SRG performed an extensive audit of the client's
records. Led by partner Stu Ross, we examined thousands of
business and personal documents to ascertain the true extent
of the client's liability. We presented his case to the IRS,
and negotiated a settlement for $2.1 million - about one third
of the original amount! We developed an installment payment
program that allowed him to continue operating his business.
A few years later, we negotiated a settlement for the remaining
$1 million in liability. The client paid only 40% of that
liability, and those payments were deferred for up to 24 months,
with no additional interest charges.
